The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by
the UN General Assembly, with a mandate to lead and coordinate
international action to protect
refugees and find durable solutions. Main concern is to ensure that every person has the right to
seek asylum and find refuge in another country, with the prospect of voluntary repatriation, local
integration in countries of
asylum or resettlement in a third country.
Since its inception, UNHCR has helped millions of people to rebuild their lives. Today, a staff of
nearly 7,190 people in more than 120 countries continues to help some 36.4 million people.
The Office of UNHCR in
Greece operating since March 1952. It cooperates with state authorities,
NGOs and other agencies and organizations to ensure the protection of refugees, asylum seekers
and all persons falling within the mandate of UNHCR. He also seeks to inform and sensit
ize public
opinion about the refugee issue in order to create a climate of tolerance and respect for the rights
of refugees.

Σοκ προκαλεί πλέον το έγγραφο της Ύπατης Αρμοστείας του ΟΗΕ προς τις Ενώσεις Ξενοδόχων Αθήνας και Θεσσαλονίκη.
Συγκεκριμένα, διερευνάται το ενδιαφέρον για την εκμίσθωση ξενοδοχειακών μονάδων 100 κλινών και άνω, 1 ή 2 αστέρων.
Σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες, επί του παρόντος δεν έχει εκδηλωθεί ενδιαφέρον και όπως λέγεται είναι πολύ δύσκολο να συμβεί, καθώς το Φθινόπωρο αποτελεί την κορύφωση της τουριστικής σεζόν για την Αθήνα και τη Θεσσαλονίκη.
